The Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill 2020.
It is not STL’s usual practice to encourage it’s subscribers to become politically active. But when it comes to legislation being proposed that makes it a criminal offence to pray according to our conscience, then we believe we need to encourage people to let our politicians know that freedom to pray as directed by one’s beliefs and conscience is a religious freedom that must be preserved.
Right now, there is the biggest attack on our religious freedom and on parental rights happening in the State of Victoria that has ever occurred in Australia. If this legislation is passed, it has the potential of becoming a blueprint for what other State Governments may attempt.
It’s in the form of The Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill 2020, being pushed through the Victorian Parliament by the Daniel Andrews Labor Government, supported by some minor parties.
At this point in time the Liberal Party Opposition are still making up their minds on the stance they will take in the next few days.
If this legislation passes through the Victorian Parliament, we need to be concerned about what else our politicians in Victoria will allow to become law that will effect our freedom to worship freely?
Similar, but less severe and far-reaching legislation has now been passed in Queensland and the ACT. The Victorian Daniel Andrews legislation goes much wider and deeper.
Should the Bill pass through the legislative process in Victoria and become law, it could well be a model that all other States in Australia adopt, particularly as they will be pressured to do so by an increasingly powerful Australian Gay Lobby.
The Bill is attempting to ban any conduct a person, including parent, which may be seen as encouraging a person, including young children of Christian families, to not change or supress or delay their change of gender from their biological gender to the gender of their choice.
The penalties for doing so will be criminal conviction, imprisonment or a substantial fine up to $500,000!
So, your child could be taught at school that their gender is their choice, that they have the right to experiment with which gender they want to choose, and parents are prohibited from counselling them against this, even praying for them!
The Australian Christian Lobby has described the Bill in these words –
If your child learns about gender fluidity at school and says they’re no longer a girl, you have to affirm that. Encouraging a “wait and see” approach will be risky. It could be family violence. It could be criminal.
If you’re a counsellor or doctor and someone tells you they’re struggling with their gender identity, seeking to address the underlying cause rather than rushing to affirmation is risky. It could be criminal.
If you’re a pastor and someone says to you, “I’m struggling with my sexuality, please pray for me,” you’re facing the reality that the Bill specifically lists prayer as a banned practice. You’re being asked to commit a crime.
The Bill also reaches over the border – Victorians can complain about conduct anywhere in the nation.
And the jail term can be up to 10 years in prison or a $500,000 fine.
It’s so broad it effectively bans—under threat of criminal sanction and prison—any conduct that can encourage a person to “change” or “suppress” their sexuality or gender identity. Even if they want to.
